Wildfires and Heatwaves Sweep Europe and the Mediterranean

Wildfires erupted across Crete, central Greece, and other parts of the Mediterranean. Firefighting services battled to contain blazes exacerbated by dry winds and parched landscapes. In Turkey and Spain, thousands were evacuated, with several casualties reported. France also saw wildfires in its southern regions, putting pressure on emergency services and infrastructure.

Climate scientists point to global warming as the key driver behind the increasingly frequent and intense heatwaves. Dry vegetation, longer summers, and inconsistent rainfall have made forests and scrublands more combustible.
